What is acupuncture?

In China, acupuncture is a special therapeutic technique of disease treatment. It is a type of “internal and external treatment” medical skill. Practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine think that more than 2,000 acupuncture points on the human body are connected by meridians or pathways. These pathways provide an energy flow (Qi) that is in charge of maintaining general health. Diseases can be brought on by energy flow disruption. It is believed that increasing the flow of Qi and consequently health can be accomplished by applying acupuncture to specific points. Thin, solid, metallic needles that are inserted into the skin and activated by the practitioner’s hands making small, precise motions or by electrical stimulation to treat various conditions.
